McCarthy’s Crossgar

Image
Hello fellow foodies.  Hope you all had a great weekend. It’s starting to get a lot colder outside isn’t it? What’s better to warm us up than a good hot chocolate. I don’t often sit in as you can probably tell if you are a frequent reader of my blog, I’m more of a takeaway person. Today I decided to treat myself and sit in a lovely cafe for my breakfast. My cafe of choice was McCarthys in Crossgar, a local family run coffee shop and sandwich bar. It is such a modern, cosy cafe with good vibes all round.  I got a small fry, which of course I forgot to take a picture of but take my word for it, it was delicious. The small fry consisted of an egg, sausage, bacon, potato bread, soda bread and a tomato which was all cooked to perfection. I also indulged in a hot chocolate, my favourite drink for the winter months which warmed me up in this cold weather. If you drink hot chocolate often you may understand what I mean when I say it tasted like an expensive hot chocolate, for referenc...

McDonald’s Festive menu

Image
Hello fellow foodies! I don’t know about anyone else but November just snuck up and took me by surprise. I’ve been super busy between uni deadlines, the Christmas rush and of course trying to find delicious food for you guys to check out. When I started this blog I always wanted to focus on smaller businesses as I think after the pandemic they deserve the most exposure and support however this week I wanted to show you a couple items from the McDonalds festive menu. I always find myself comparing food I eat to McDonald’s, I just can’t help it. I’ll hear myself saying “well that was a nice burger but I probably would’ve got one just as nice for half the price at McDonald’s” although a lot of these food places I’m checking out these days have their own uniqueness, making it a lot more difficult to compare. I wanted to check out the McDonald’s festive menu as not only did it sound and look great, but with the festive period approaching or maybe for some it’s already in full swing, I thoug...

Piccolos Pizzeria

Hello fellow foodies. Do you like or maybe even love spicy food? Are you asking yourself where is the best pizza place in NI? I hope so, because today’s blog is going to introduce to a flavoursome spicy pizza which I would say is the best in NI.   Today’s blog is in Bangor, County Down. One of my favourite places for a day out. There is beautiful views of the sea, Pickie Park to have fun on the swans and my favourite pizza shop, Piccolos Pizza Bangor, because at the end of every good day out is an even greater takeaway 😁 . Piccolos serves authentic Italian- style food,    they have 80 menu items and have been serving the Bangor area for 30 years. Each time I have visited their food has been fresh, tasty and their service has been top class. After reading their reviews I have quickly realised they are a much loved pizza shop across Northern Ireland with people admittedly travelling miles to buy their food.  My go to order is a Volcano pizza 🌋🍕  , one of their ...

The Hatch

Image
Hello fellow foodies. If you have any form of social media whether it be Facebook, TikTok or Instagram you'll have noticed how popular street food is becoming in Northern Ireland. Street food vans seem to be popping up everywhere, quickly followed by the quirky videos, boomerangs and pictures promoting them across social media sites. An article on Belfast Live stated, " Takeaway and food stalls numbers increased by 64% to reach 1,363, while event catering went up by 70% to reach 631, compared to last year" (Toufexi, 2021). I guess that means I'll have plenty of street food trucks to check out for you all, you can thank me later😉. I decided to start my street food adventure in Newcastle, County Down at The Hatch Food Truck. The Hatch began in an old Gazebo and they worked themselves up to be an award-winning, well-loved fast food truck. You can read more about their story on their website  here . Where would be a better place to start my street food adventure than an ...

The Daily Grind and Mabels

Image
My first craving since created Phatblog took me to Downpatrick, County Down. Legend has it St Patrick lived here in the 5th century and was buried on the Hill of Down where Downpatrick Cathedral has been since the 12th Century (St Patrick's Centre, 2021). The Downpatrick Cathedral is a beautiful, historical building and there's parking on the street facing it if you want to eat your food with a view. I visited the Daily Grind Cafe, it has a great atmosphere with a relaxing sit-in area and also offers take-aways. Their main menu is filled with different sandwiches, toasties, salads and lovely drinks. They have also created a "Souper Duper Specials" menu just in time for Autumn AKA 'Soup Season' which includes lots of tasty soup and sandwich combos. I opted for a takeaway cup of soup and toastie combo. I had a cup of carrot&lentil soup and a flavourful white bread toastie with ham, cheese, pineapple, red onion and chilli&tomato relish. All of their sandw...
